Crime & Punishment

This is a new page and a new idea I have for presenting some pictures and information. This page will look at how crime has been dealt with through the cities history. When it is finished it will, hopefully, have quite a bit of information about prisons, the police and forms of punishment. For the moment, however, I will start with a few photos while I commence my research.

Vernon Street Prison

Otherwise known as the New County Gaol, this was the third of Derby's prisons and was in use from 1843 until 1919. For the next decade it served as a military prison before closing permanently in 1929. Following its closure, much of it was demolished and for many years it served as a greyhound racing track until 1988. Derelict for a number of years it was eventually turned into an office campus but fortunately the developers carried out a highly commendable restoration of the magnificent prison facade
